Phase III

A. This class has given me a completely different perspective on how to teach lesson plans. Integrating technology makes most things so much more interesting.  The use of technology opened up my imagination to do so much more than I ever thought.  My first impression when taking this class was that we would learn a few techniques to integrate in class but it opened up doors and taught me so much more than I had expected.

B. This class will definitely impact my future teaching experiences.  I will be sure to include technology in whatever way I can.  We were taught so many techniques from movie making to creating a blog.  I had previously presented the lesson plan that I presented in class but had not incorporated very much technology.  When modifying the lesson plan to include technology I believe it made it so much more effective.  When reading the comments about my lesson plan my peers commented that the online games and videos even kept them engaged.  The overall experience of this class was definitely a postive one!

Phase II

1. Instructional Decisions/Teaching:
The modifications I provided in my lesson were for a gifted student as well as a student who is deaf.  The gifted student as well as students who recieved a perfect score on the assessment would have the opportunity to participate in a mock store activity. The student who is deaf will do everything that the other children do including the pre-assessment, anticipatory set, the lesson, and the homework. This student should be sitting in an area where the pictures of the money are visible.  While giving the lesson make sure to speak in an exaggerated manner so that the student will be able to read your lips. The student should be watching the teacher very carefully during the lesson. The use of the online money games was a way that I accomodate to students that might learn easier when playing a game.   http://www.math-play.com/money-game-2/Money-Game.html

2. Assessment of Learning:
After reading the comments on my blog about my lesson plan I realized that the game that the students played might have been a little too difficult for certain students just because we did not go over different operations to solve the money problems.  Although the assessment I provided did assess what the students had learned during the lesson.  I explained that although in class I did not have my classmates write their own money word problems my actual class would have, which would have better enabled the students to answer the questions on their in-class worksheets.
The comments left on my blog also did confirm my belief that the presentation of my lesson was a success.  Presenting this lesson plan might have been the most comfortable I have ever been when presenting a lesson to my peers.  I believe that if I had presented this lesson to an actual 2nd grade class the class would have been successful.  It was a great experience.

Phase I

1. Assessing Prior Knowledge:
To assess the students prior knowledge of working with money I will ensure the students know the value of the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar bill by giving the students a worksheet that will require that the students combine coins to make a dollar.  I will show 2 videos that will reinforce the value of each coin and the dollar bill using these links,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk_6pFkugU&NR=1&feature=fvwp
2. Plans Instruction:
The standard for the lesson is for the students to correctly solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.  By allowing the students to use manipulatives such as, play money, it will give the students a better understanding of how to combine money and associate word problems with actual money. The students will be playing an online game to reinforce what they have learned in the lesson.  The game requires the students to be the cashier and they will have the opportunity to read the question and give the person the correct change.  This game is a fun, interactive way for the students to learn this concept.  http://www.math-play.com/money-game-2/Money-Game.html

3. Designing Instruction:
To ensure that the instructional design for this lesson was organized I made sure the standard was taken into complete consideration.  It was important to ensure the lesson was taught in a manner that would engage the students and would also have the objective of teaching the standard.  The lessson revolves around money which is a concept that can be made easily relatable.  The students will be exposed to variations of instruction to ensure their understanding of the standard.  The students will be shown the youtube videos to reinforce what they have previously learned, online money games to learn concept, and worksheets to assess learning. It was important to incorporate technology into the lesson plan because technology is so important to the students and it is an excellent way for the students to learn different concepts.

4. Planning Assessment:
The assessment is a worksheet that assess the students capabiltiy of reading money word problems and solving them correctly.  The assessment does not require the students to solve any problems using their own understanding.  It was important to ensure the assessment would only test students knowledge of the material after being given the lesson.  The word problems were catered to what the students learned in class and were very similar to the problems worked on in class.  The online money game is another form of assessment although their performance is not recorded it requires that the student be knowledgeable in order to be successful in the game, therefore, the students to continue to practice and develop their skills of the concept.
